Dementia at Fifty!

Dementia, Venting, Too Young, Aging

March 30, 2023

I’ve always been pretty self-sufficient as a woman. I enjoy mowing the lawn, but I have to pay someone to weed eat. I can trim limbs, bushes, banana trees…just give me sawzall and I’ll come out almost unscathed with some blisters on my hands. I enjoy most yard work and I’m not too afraid of snakes, but I’m terrified of spiders and palmetto bugs! I’ve attempted to clean the carburetor on my mower by watching a YouTube video, but I finally faced the facts that there are going to be some things I just can’t do and I don’t want to do them either! I like being a girl, being treated like a lady and doing things on my own. Men’s work is not all it’s cracked up to be. When something around here does need repaired or worked on I do give it my very best shot and I try to avoid Larry when an issue arises for fear he’ll want to jump in and help. Like last night he told me we need to move the AC because it’s in the way, my work around to this was if we moved it to the front it would be below his bedroom window. ..he doesn’t stomp off but muddles under his breath I think I’m the boss of everything! So, our conversation goes from that to being hungry in a blink of an eye. He’s no longer mad though!

You know how you must look away from a child so they don’t catch you laughing at them for something silly they do or say? That’s how our golf cart ride started out. Larry came walking down the stairs with his favorite North Face vest on backwards and inside out! He as so angry and would have been even more upset if he would have caught me, but it was funny! We’re playing counting cats on our rides, we live in a feral cat community it seems. So we count them, it’s good for his memory and he’s engaged the whole ride. We work as a team counting them to see if the count changes day to day, today we counted 16. Now, he’s come up with more parts to the game:

  • If it’s a dead cat and he sees it first, we leave it there. If I see it first we get a shovel and bury it! He’s been on the lookout!
  • A hawk on a post = 10 points
  • An alligator = 50 points
  • A deer = 100 points
  • and if we’re lucky enough to see a manatee, it’s an automatic win!

He played Uno last night too! We didn’t keep score or play by the rules. Those that have played Uno with me know how hard that was for me! 😂 Initially, he agreed to play for one hour, we made it 30 minutes. I’m starting to learn that it’s all about compromise! Anyway, he’s ready for his breakfast for dinner so I better get busy.

Thank you all so much for the encouraging words I’ve gotten on here, on FB, text or call, it means so much. Thank you for the prayers, I feel them!
